The Jays found out the hard way, winning in Toronto means ticket sales will plummet. The Jays always sold out prior to winning two World Series.
ReplyDeleteAfter the 1983 Argo Grey Cup win, the CFL died in Toronto. The Leafs management understands this Toronto fan phenomena. Think back to the McDonald Sittler run for the Cup in the 1970s. The next year they gutted the team. The Gilmour Clark Cup run in 1993, the next year management gutted the team. The Leafs always sell out at very high prices, because Toronto fans love to lose. The Jays had to get out of first place, if they want to sell more tickets.

ReplyDeleteYes, it dates back to the American Revolution. After the war the American Loyalists were forced to relocate into Canada. Ontario was founded on Loyalist principles. This is why, 200 years later people in Ontario have a soft spot for losers. There is no other place in the world that has greater fan support for losing teams then Toronto.

ReplyDeleteI guess the problem for the theory is that when the Leafs last won the Cup in 1967 both them and the Canadiens were equal as all time winners with 13 each. Was nobody going to the games during that stretch?
Argos losing popularity in the 80's? Same with every other CFL city outside of the prairies. Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto, and Vancouver were playing to empty stadiums. The CFL had so many things wrong with it.
The Jays popularity was killed by the baseball strike. Interest in baseball, even in the US, has declined.
The Leafs admit with only six teams in the league, the math dictated some success.
