Disgrace at Carleton - My Alumnus

Seriously Cartoon, don't ever ask me for money again, ok?

Students Association rules to discontinue Cystic Fibrosis fund raising

All of which would seem to make cystic fibrosis research a worthy cause, right?

Wrong, you racist! This week, the Students’ Association at Carleton University in Ottawa voted to drop cystic fibrosis as the beneficiary of its annual $1-million Shinearama fundraiser. The reason: CF “has been recently revealed to only affect white people, and primarily men” — and therefore is insufficiently “inclusive.”

Un-f---ing believable!

UPDATE: Looks like they are going to repeal the decision , no doubt after a huge backlash. (Hat Tip: Strack Attacks)

"I think everyone at the council really did have the best intentions with it," Smyth said. "Nobody meant any ill will to anyone who has been affected or touched by cystic fibrosis at all. And we really do apologize for all of this confusion. It's not what we meant for Carleton students at all."

I love the half-assed apology about the "confusion." They were on record saying it affected "white men" and wasn't "inclusive". There was no confusion. It was interpreted loud and clear.

  1. Holy guaca-fuckin'-mole! I have a simple solution. Since it's CF that's sexist and racist. Let's ban it!

  2. What a complete joke but not all that surprising considering they banned the Pro-life club from existing on campus.

What makes it even more of a joke is that they're actually wrong. According to the Post, "Had the author of this resolution bothered so much as to look at Wikipedia, here is what he or she would have found: "Approximately one in 25 people of European descent ... is a carrier of a cystic fibrosis mutation. Although CF is less common in these groups, approximately one in 46 Hispanics, one in 65 Africans and one in 90 Asians carry at least one abnormal CFTR gene. Cystic fibrosis is diagnosed in males and females equally."

Even if they were right I take it they would find Breast Cancer and Prostate Cancer (to name a couple) unworthy of their funding? Ridiculous.

  3. I wonder what they think of funding research battling AIDS?

  4. It's pure racism. Substitute "white" for "black", "male" for "female" and there would be an uproar like you wouldn't believe. They're saying go die whitey, sorry, not a trendy enough race.

  5. Lesson learned?

  6. The racist stuff was just preamble to the motion. They didn't want to hurt people with CS. They just wanted to help someone else next time. Riiiight... was it just too boring to collect on behalf of the same charity year after year?
