Time's Men Person's of the Year Since 1927

This website is very cool to look at. Every Time Magazine Person's of the Year. If you click on each cover, they have the explanatory write up. From hindsight, it's interesting to see some of the people that we have forgotten over the years. For example, James F. Byrnes in 1946 or Willy Brandt in 1970.

The cover to the left features Nikita Khrushchev for 1957. We haven't forgotten him. (Mainly for crushing Hungary in 1956, and for the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962.) So why did they give it to him in 1957? First looking at the picture, I couldn't understand what the ball, with what looked like strings attached, was. Well, it was Sputnik. I remember my father telling me how big of a deal this was considered back then.

  1. I seem to remember hearing that Hitler was a Time Man of the year, back in the mid 1930s.

  2. He was for 1938. The criteria back then was for top "news maker" whether the news was good or bad. Uncle Joe Stalin got it twice and Mao got it.

They stopped giving it to clear-cut bad guys since the Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979.

  5. Fydor, you might want to take a breath before you type throw away lines like "Rex Murphyish Roman paralells" because I don't recall Rex talking about Rome. Unless there is something that I missed? By the tone, I take it you are trying to burn Anon. But how are you doing this by comparing him to an articulate, well respected guy like Murphy? (Movie critic: Boy, I hated that actor, it was like watching Orson Wells in Citizen Kane.)

Also, you might want to explain what: "automaton-Time-magazine-editorial mind" means. Sorry the reference isn't self explanitory.

  6. I do agree with the OBL Time magazine comment. Yes, the term mentally challenged is a little weak, that was the point. A modern day politically correct way of saying you are an asshole. It was a down play on your stupidity.I am sure other readers can see the humour in the comment. I suggest you read some of your own comments on the Blog, before you belittle other people`s comments. Also, for God`s sakes read some books.

  9. Point is that it is a popular and not groundbreaking idea that the US or modern politicians are like Romans.

-----> The US at its founding used Rome as a model. The term Republic. They have the "Senate". If you look at the architecture of major public buildings, ie., the US Supreme Court building, it is Roman style. They use the eagle as their symbol. Rome is the foundation of western civilization. (This alphabet we're using is Roman.) We learn from the Romans good and bad. It is part of us. It's not some vague reference and not unpatriotic as you are implying.
